Paris – Bill Cunningham

March 11th, 2012

King of street style photography, Bill Cunningham has recently been honored with an award winning documentary called Bill Cunningham New York. Not that Bill is at all bothered by all the fuss. Apparently the film makers took 8 years to persuade Bill to do the documentary in the first place. Well it was worth the wait and the results are a very compassionate documentary insight into Bill and his life.

Last season Bill came up to me at a show and remarked, ” I love the way you get down on the ground to photograph those shoes-it’s the only way to gette’m”. I was flattered, surprised and inspired by Bills comments and the fact that he had noticed me at all. Recently in Paris a few days ago I asked Bill about a photo I took of him last season, with a guy grinning ear-to-ear with Bill. Bill tells me his name is Moko and that he runs a fashion boutique in Paris called Chrome hearts. I just love the juxtaposition and interaction of these two guys, along with the evident fondness they have for each other. You can see a selection of Bills fabulous images on the Guardian website, along with the portrait I took of Bill recently (top of this post)
