London – Neelesh
December 17th, 2012Neelesh is wearing a WW2 era Royal Navy duffel Jacket. Neelesh says “this kit from the Royal Navy has influenced the duffel coat you typically see these days in the high street”. Originally this jacket would have had toggles made from Walrus teeth, which would have made it easier to do up in extreme cold weather. This jacket also became a 1950s staple and was often seen sported by Soho Beats, Sorbonne students and poetry reading peaceniks and CND marchers. Neelesh works in music publishing, but also has an online antique fashion shop with his fiancée, called Leftovers Brixton. (clothes from 1850s to 1940s). Neelesh says “we sell quite a bit to fashion/costume designers who reference a lot of these old cuts and patterns in their creations. These cream coats are quite hard to come by in standard form but what I love about this ‘rustic’ coat is its unique stand collar vs a shawl collar and early plastic buttons instead of toggles. Both adjustments indicating a degree of personalisation by its previous owner and making the coat all the more interesting and unique”.

lol no he’s not. The original was a vast knee length coat with wooden toggles hood and throat cuff in a light tan in colour. That thing doesn’t even bare a passing resemblance to one. The smallest size (size 1) would have made him look like a mobile tent. Check you facts chaps.
