London – New Wave
November 16th, 2011When I spotted final year St Martins fashion marketing student Sara, wearing a dress by Maharishi, shoes by Comme des Garcons, glasses by Alain Mikli , and charity shop finds-it reminded me of “New Wave”. During late 70s in the shadow of punk, the music art movement “New Wave” ruled. largely born out of the art colleges of the USA and UK, and the less aggressive more sophisticated sister of the Punk Rock movement-which was largely spawned from the housing estates of the UK and building projects of NYC. The two movements somehow happily coincided, both offering subversive, challenging music and fashion statements. They were one of the same, but somehow different- a bit like Sara’s style.
